We are Musicians
INTENT
At Haydonleigh we aim to make music an engaging learning experience. We want children to understand that music is a means of communicating ideas and feelings. We aim to inspire children and to help them think and feel like musicians. We will equip children with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own music as well as be able to talk about and appreciate different types of music. In addition we offer opportunities to sing, play instruments and perform.
IMPLEMENTATION
Music teaching at Haydonleigh delivers the requirements of the National Curriculum through the use of the Charanga Scheme of Work. This scheme is used from EYFS to Year 6 alongside an additional two terms of whole class instrumental teaching on the recorder from Swindon Music Service for years 3,4, and 5. Each term has its own unit of work with a specific focus on one of these:
- Listening and Responding
- Singing
- Playing an instrument
- Improvising
- Composing
- Performing
In addition our assemblies include a monthly Musician of the Month introduction that allows children to listen to a broad range of musical styles from different periods of time and cultures. We also sing in some assemblies as a way of coming together.
IMPACT
Children at Haydonleigh will be able to talk about how music makes them feel. By the end of KS2 they will have a broad musical vocabulary to be able to use when responding to music. They will have experienced playing tuned and untuned instruments, understand some musical notation and know the importance of music in our world.
